Sigur ros - Rimur Tour EP with Steindór Andersen 2001
Sigur ros - Rimur Tour EP with Steindór Andersen 2001
From www.sigur-ros.co.uk
in early 2001, sigur rós set out to record some songs in their newly-completed álafoss swimming pool studio with their friend steindór andersen. steindór andersen is a fisherman and chairman of the icelandic poetry society, called iðunn. steindór is a chanter/singer of the traditional icelandic epic poetry form called rímur. rímur are narrative poems which generally tell stories of icelandic heroes and epic battles which have been passed down generations in iceland through word-of-mouth since the 14th century. rímur were regarded as a performance art; a good rímur chanter would engage his listeners with his clever rhyming schemes and catchy melodies. rímur were performed on winter nights when inhabitants sat occupied by their work (making clothing from wool, wreathing horsehairs into ropes, cutting tools from wood, etc.) for seven centuries, this was icelanders' only branch of entertainment and it's only recently that this tradition has dissolved.
the steindór andersen ep contains six songs, three of which sigur rós accompany him on. two songs feature steindór alone and the last song on the cd is steindór and his friend sigurður sigurðarson singing the poem lžkurinn (the stream), recorded under the bridge of the stream by sigur rós's studio.
1000 copies of the cd were printed and sold in the spring tour of 2001, where steindór joined the band to perform the songs from the ep. (here is a photo of steindór performing with the band.) the cd was sold in a blank white paper case and the artwork on the cd itself was minimal. there are currently no plans to release this cd.

Sigur ros - Live HBO's Reverb 17.10.2001 - Video
I am very happy to post the video of this recent audio post. Out of all the Sigur ros videos i have seen, this one is my absolute favourite. Most of the time the entire stage is washed in blue lighting which seems to work very well. The video footage itself lends itself so well to the sound, focusing on all the right aspects, such as Jonsi's guitar and especially many glorious close up shots of Jonsi's face showing the concentration and precision that goes into the music. Also included are the two short interviews

Bill Hicks - One Night Stand
A legendary 1990 performance by an American hero, Bill Hicks. A man who was ahead of his time and who refused to be censored. He despised all that was hypocritical about our country in a time where it was very unpopular to do so.
If you know Bill Hicks then nothing needs to be said here if you dont know Bill Hicks you may well find yourself waking up and smelling the bacon after listening to this.

Iron and Wine - Live Amstel Amsterdam 28.06.2003 & KCRW 2002 / 2007
3 shows for you here. been wanting to post some Iron and Wine for a while. Its a little different to Sigur Ros ! but i like Sam Beam (above) because he has an 'epic' beard and a very similar temperament to Sigur ros. By that I mean he is a very gentle, humble and down to earth character. his music is singer song writer in the tradition of soft bluegrass. He has the enviable talent of being able to write amazing songs out of ordinary things.
Sam Beam was born and raised in South Carolina before eventually moving to Florida to study film at Florida State University. After receiving his MFA from FSU, he moved south and began teaching Film and Cinematography at the University of Miami.
In 2002, he released his debut album on SubPop Records – traditionally a more rock-oriented label based in Seattle (though they have occasionally released records by singer/songwriters such as Rosie Thomas and Danielle Howle).
The Creek That Drank the Cradle (2002) was recorded and produced entirely by Beam himself at his home in Miami. On it, Beam can be heard playing all the instruments and singing in a hushed, secretive, but still rather melodic voice. His songs range from in-depth literate narratives ("Jesus the Mexican Boy") to love songs ("Naked As We Came"), and have helped to usher in a new generation of folk-pop singer/songwriters.
Since releasing The Creek, Beam/Iron & Wine has developed a fierce following. He has released nine albums to date, including his most recent collaboration with indie rock/alt.country band Calexico. As I have uploaded 3 shows in one posting I wont include the track listing

Peter Broderick - Tour EP & Oddities and Sketches
Peter Broderick - Tour EP & Oddities and Sketches
Peter Broderick is a very talented musician and is fast becoming a firm favorite of mine. His two latest releases - 'Float' and 'Home' are both absolute must haves. Float is like a cross between Olafur Arnalds and Goldmund where as Home has similitudes to Helios and Explosions in the Sky's Friday Night Lights. If you enjoy any of these, you will love Peter's work. A review of 'Home' and some more information is supplied below
Bookmat' website:
Since his last full-length appearance (his highly acclaimed debut album 'Float' for the Type label), Peter Broderick has been a very busy man. Alongside writing and touring extensively (both on his own and as part of Efterklang's wonderful live band), Broderick has also had to contend with the intensifying adoration thrust his way by an ever increasing fanbase. For his Bella Union debut Broderick has, if anything, created an even more fully-realised collection of tracks, building on the soundscapes and vignettes of his debut to create fully-fledged songs somewhere between the worlds of traditional singer/songwriting and magical found sounds. Album opener 'Games' sets out the agenda perfectly with impressive, layered vocal harmonies and a sunday afternoon guitar strum that's momentarily joined at the very last minute by some intangible yet evocative field recordings that take you outside the confines of tradition. "And It's Alright' follows and must easily count as Broderick's most accomplished achievement to date, it's just one of those songs so perfectly structured and realised that you can't imagine ever not having heard it. It's so good, in fact, we'd even go as far as saying it sounds like a Mark Kozelek production, which in our world is just about as high a compliment as it gets. The album closes with a reprise/version of 'Games', this time round opting for a more abstract canvas that brings things to a contemplative, suitably cathartic close. Expect big things from this chap, 'Home' really is quite wonderful.

Sigur ros - Brussels-Belgium 10.10.2001
An excellant quality audience recording from 2001. I particularly wanted to include this concert because it includes the song Salka, although for a long time un-released, now available on the Hvarf-Heim CD. Salka was originaly going to be included on the ( ) album but was later dropped, which is why during this period Sigur ros where playing it fairly regularly as part of their live sets but never made it onto an album until recently. Actualy the reason we have it on the Hvarf-Heim album at all is because the record company insisted on an accompaning new CD to be released along with the Heima film.

Ólafur Arnalds - Live 23.10.2008 Kendal UK
Ólafur Arnalds is in my view, one of todays most talented modern classical composers. At only 21 years old he manages to find a depth of emotional intensity and maturity that is extroidinary for someone of his age.
This concert was recorded in a very small venue with only 30 or so people. It was unusual in that there was a complete lack of any noise from the audience. Whether this was from reverence or just English reserve is difficult to say but the music was very emotive and moving. I always feel deep parts of myself being touched by Ólafur's music with last nights concert being no exception. I have enormous admiration for this artist so I have included four videos which you can find below . . .
NB: Thanks to !linus and Rubardidoo for help with track listings and for doing it right
"If you thought Sigur Rós had the patent on hauntingly beautiful and meticulously compelling music coming out of Iceland, then Ólafur Arnalds is here to educate you otherwise. - Eulogy For Evolution is perhaps this years most hauntingly emotive sounding experience."

This event marked Sigur ros's 1st exposure to America. Lineage: I recorded this from the radio back when it was broadcast, and cut the resulting .wav file into separate tracks for burning it onto CD. (Note that Untitled 3 and Untitled 8 are joined together in track/file #2, as they melt together in this live performance.) Now I ripped the CD's, converted the .wav files to FLAC, et voilà.
Here's another great concert from the ( ) period. Its a very nice, smooth gentle concert with great quality sound. Unfortunately there is a slight 'cricket chirping' sound at times in the background but, if you imagine your listening to the concert outside, somewhere exotic, its not too bad. This is another of those 'Oh My God - this is my favourite ever concerts' concert. An absolute classic from the ( ) era. What makes it so good is the depth of feeling and intensity of emotion that comes through on these songs. You really feel Jonsi means what he is singing. Jonsi's voice has evolved amazingly over the years but one thing I have noticed latley is a certain sadness and emotional depth which is expressed wonderfully within these songs and which is, arguably, no longer present. Its different now, although not in a bad way, now you cant but help but be picked up in waves of joy and share in a much more intermite way, the wonderful experience of a happier Sigur ros. Alafoss, and Daudlagio are spectacular but Popplagio is an experience in itself. Perfect

As much as I feel I shouldn't, I cant but help liking this quirky band. Difficult to explain how they sound. A little bit like Parachutes only more so . . . or is it less so . . . ! 'Guest' commented they sound a bit like Efterklang.

Absolutely superb soundboard concert. Quite nicely balanced between very simple piano pieces and what, seems to becoming Eluvium's show piece epic screaming ambient post rock pieces. You may notice a slight difference in the sound texture during the quieter pieces. On the original the solo pieces were very low in volume so i have tried to compensate where possible. This is no criticism of the taper, its just that the sheer difference in volume between levels, left some tracks a little too low for comfort. Can be corrected if needed. Just let me know if you feel it needs it. Enjoy

I wasnt familiar with tracks although I noted the majority are on his recent album 'Indecripherable Text' Its an audience taping so apologies for the sporadic but consistent talking (not a criticism of the taper - its just a little unfortunate)

Video and Audio - Exclusive live studio acoustic version of Njosnavelin. An essential viewing for Sigur ros fans and in fact everyone. This is the best interview i have seen of them to date. It shows them as they are, despite enormous success, still very much down to earth and quite humble. Its geat to hear Jonsi finally reveal the truth behind 'Hopelandic' his made up lanquage! I like Verity Sharp, she is doing a similar job to the late John Peel with the BBC show 'Late Junction' Watch her face during the performance!

Season - Avatar
Season - Avatar
An excellant post rock album from an Australian band which sadly no longer excists. However when they disbanded they kindly put their stuff up for free on the record companies web site.
Here is a review from 'Splendid Magazine'
The strings that open Avatar are part of an unsettling instrumental opus that serves as a perfect Cure-like introduction to this dark and moody album. Like Scotland's Mogwai, this Melbourne, Australia group creates atonal, droning songs that ebb and flow with emotion and power. Not since my first experience with Austin's Explosions in the Sky have I been so blown away by the talent of a relatively unknown band. Once again my faith in music, which can wane from time to time, has been fully restored.
Avatar is the perfect prescription for dark nights and stark winters. Guitars wail one moment, then almost whisper the next, and each song flows beautifully into its successor. Each musician -- guitarist/keyboardist James McGauran, bassist/keyboardist David Charles and drummer/bassist Bart Kowalski -- knows how to create the right mood for the moment, and their songs reflect a certain smugness, which at the same time projects an innocent DIY charm. It's almost as if the band doesn't quite know how good it is.
"God Mode", "Give Up The Ghost" and "Into The Light" are Avatar's best tracks, clocking in at more than 35 minutes collectively; the towering "Into The Light" is the best of the bunch. And while "Throw Me To The Sky" and "Sea Level" hover near the eight-minute mark themselves, neither song packs quite the punch of their longer siblings. Guest vocalist Karen Vogt makes an appearance on "Throw Me...", her voice almost otherworldly in its simplicity. Softly sung and heavily effected, her vocals present an interesting contrast to Avatar's other, entirely instrumental songs.
A number of bands are making similar music -- Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, and the aforementioned Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky are among Season's best-known peers. But whereas those acts' albums often sound heavily produced, Season's music is a bit rougher, which works in their favor. Perhaps that's why Avatar is one of the best albums I've heard this year.-- David A. Cobb

Mono - New song - Yesterday (carpenters cover)
This is a really nice version but . . . come on, it just begs the question. A Japanese Post Rock band decides to do a cover of a Carpenters song??? Look at the picture above, As they say in America - 'you do the math'
Joking apart, its very nice

From the website:
What is the underlying souce of power of MONO? What makes their sound so powerful as if it reaches the bottome of our heart, grab it and shake it brutally?
What makes their music go beyond the borders and create the same exceptional craziness among people of different color of skin, different race, different language?

Im very happy to post this one for two reasons. First its the companion to Parachutes show posted earlier, so now we have the 1st complete show posted.
Second there is a real treat waiting for you on this one. Jonsi sings solo on stage with his acoustic, a heart rendingly beautiful version of Illgresi. You hear him giggle when he fluffs a chord. Also in this show, the last song Popplagio begins really slow, much slower than previously to build up into that fantastic crescendo at the end. I dont know how they do it, but they just keep getting better ! Again big thanks to JB for taping this.

Sigur ros - Benaroya Hall - Seattle 05.10.2008 - RE-MASTER 2008
Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again . . . this is a really great show. It starts off softly with 'Heysatan' and 'All alright' before cranking up with 'Ny Batteri'.
There is something special now, with 'Njosnavelin' where at the end, Jonsi sings a heart rending solo which gave me goosebumps. Another song of note is 'Festival'. Jonsi holds a consistant barely audible note for about 30 seconds which is exquisite and as you can hear is appreciated by the audience. Maybe doesnt sounds that impressive? Try it !
Maybe its just me but i'm sure Jonsi is using some different effects for his guitar, check it out during Vio vel til Loftarasa. Also i wish i was there because just before Meo Blotnasir he talks away in Icelandic for a while before asking the audience "do you understand the word 'seiour', it means sing, can you sing with us now?" I just wonder who he was talking too? This is Seattle USA ! If you speak Icelandic I would love to know what he says
This is a fantastic quality concert, not too far from retail quality, so massive thanks to the taper - "cut_here" Enjoy

Sigur ros - Hammersmith Apollo London 12.02.2003 RE-MASTER 2008
Im very happy to post this concert from 2003. Its a superb and unique concert for a number of reasons.
Firstly, an extremely rare rendition of Staralfur Live.
Secondly a perfectly sung and moving Guitardjamm.
Thirdly, here Jonsi sings a version of Vaka where he really lets go at the end. I've only ever seen him do this on the video of 'Last Call with Carson Daly'. The version on the album really seems to downplay this part of Vaka which seems a great shame. Seeing the emotion and intensity that you see on the video always gives me goosebumps
Fourthly, its also particularly moving hearing Jonsi sing in the background of Samskyeti, almost it sounds like, to himself. Perhaps quite poignant when you consider the meaning of Samskyeti as being attachment.
This was a particularly difficult concert to master due to many 'low end' and other issues with the original. Its taken a lot of work to get it here, Its not perfect but i hope I've managed to bring out the best possible for your enjoyment.

Explosions in the Sky - The Rescue EP
Explosions in the Sky - The Rescue EP
Recorded in Austin, Texas (at Michael's house) January 2005
Released in October 2005 (part of the TRL Travels In Constants subscription series...subscriptions are all sold out and this record isn't in stores, but we will be selling them at shows for the next couple of years)
We promised Jeremy we would do a Travels in Constants e.p. literally over four years ago. Since then we've been sidetracked by an astonishing number of things. Two thousand and five was our year to take a bit of a step back and take some time to write new music, and along the way somewhere we got an idea for doing this e.p. in a different way then we've ever approached writing music. It can take us months and months and months to write even a song. Sometimes it comes much quicker, but often we spend many an afternoon trying out new melodies and riffs and drum beats, playing things over and over, obsessing and arguing and sighing and sitting silently for what seems to be hours on end. So, for this, our idea was to write and record a song every day for two weeks (this later became eight days) and the rest of the two weeks would be spent trying to mix and master the results. No riffs were to be written beforehand; things would be pretty much made up on the spot. It seemed daunting but fun and, perhaps, instructive. A learning experience. A chance to try new instruments and new ways of thinking about writing songs. Its also our first attempt at recording ourselves (the whole thing was recorded in Michael's house). Anyway, The Rescue is the result.

Explosions in the Sky - Bowery Ball Room - 12.12.2005
Originally broadcast live on NPR radio's All Songs Considered Concert series out of Washington DC this concert aptly demonstrates again just how good a band Explosions are live. Broadcast in full stereo this concert may suffer slightly being only a 192kbps rip but its still a fantastic broadcast quality concert.
From the website:
March 17, 2007 - Explosions in the Sky is a quartet from Austin, TX making what they call "cathartic mini-symphonies." Known for wildly intense live performances, their songs are sprawling, epic pieces that build and evolve, often over a span of ten or more minutes a track. Though decidedly non-commercial, Explosions in the Sky has built a large and loyal following for layering beautifully orchestrated melodies against passionate sonic chaos.Explosions in the Sky features guitarists Munaf Rayani and Mark Smith, Michael James on bass and guitar and drummer Chris Hrasky.

Explosions in the Sky - Live Philadelphia - 18.03.2007
Explosions in the Sky - Live Philadelphia - 18.03.2007
Another fantastic concert from Explosions in the Sky. These guys have been playing together for years now. Since their last album 'All of a sudden i miss everyone' they have been working harder on their live sets to the degree where the songs now meld into each other in an extraordinarily imaginative and entertaining manner. To see them live is to truly appreciate this. The effort that is put in by each of the band on stage is breathtaking and inspiring. To watch the drummer with his head bowed down, exhausted, tapping the cymbols above his head or Munaf kneeling on the stage with this guitar on perminant feedback beside him, beating the floor with a tamborine in time with the music, almost in tears is . . . something else. A great concert. Please enjoy
ps. It never fails to make me laugh the comment from one guy just before the 1st track, clearly showing his deep appreciation for the music by shouting . . . . 'explosions in my pants' !!?
