Ólafur Arnalds - Bridgewater Hall, Manchester - Première performance of '...And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness' with the RCNM Orchestra, Directed by André de Ridder - 01.07.2010
This particular post was originally the full concert but Ólafur requested that I only post the 4 tracks below that he was happiest with. There are some very good reasons for this which he kindly explained & was happy for me to share his words with you...
"- This is a work in progress, after this concert i realised that many of the arrangements weren't good enough (this is my first ever try at arranging for an orchestra) and i will be re-arranging things for the next show. But as many people are quite excited for this, i don't want them to stumble upon this recording and write it off as it is now.
- Due to exreme time restrictions on the day of the show we didn't manage to sound check properly and some elements are missing while some elements are way too loud (for example the electronic drums in Hægt, kemur ljósið, which are supposed to be a background ambience rather than a heavy drumbeat)- In fact we made our own, professional recording of the show and ideas are aloft about releasing them (or a recording of the next orchestra show, because of the few flaws in this one). If people have your recording already, whatever opinion they may have of it, they will probably not be so exciting to get my recording of it.
- In the end i just want to keep this as an exclusive thing for now, we will be doing more concerts like this in the future and give people to experience this both live and on proper recordings"
The 4 tracks presented here have been personally chosen & offered through Ólafur's kindness :)
I will keep you posted with news of future concerts & of a very exciting impending release.
Thanks again to Ólafur for allowing his live material to be posted for fans enjoyment.

NB: Unfortunately I wasn't able to record the Jonny Greenwood set but there is a 3 minute edit of a part of it here as I set my levels. (kind of interesting to hear the difference in quality when the actual mic's get turned on) [Made a mistake - THIS, that I recorded, is from Avner Dorman -Download
Here is the Jonny Greenwood piece] (from another source) Download

:P
a great blog!
sr. inestable, ólafur doesn't sing in HIS albums. it's not the same ólafur arnalds than ölaf arnalds.
first of all, this is not the world premiere of this album played live. he played it some months ago in a concert in japan.
second, this cannot be considered classical. ólafur arnalds is not erik satie, he only plays a piano, almost always the same melody once and over again. his music is beautiful, of course, but not classical music.
1. true, it is not the Icelandic female singer

Tell me you guys have the johnny greenwood set too?
....
:)
I wish!! So sorry I didn't record it. I didn't realise just how awesome it was till it was over :( Also I recorded the Olifur concert in 96,000, 32 bit so I only had just enough space & battery juice for one. I have about 3 minutes though which I used to set levels. I'll post it here in the comments soon
Jonny Greenwood - edit - http://www.mediafire.com/?qnmugdzzdzz
(as posted above)
this isn't Greenwood. this is Dorman you recorded there.
Oh! sorry, wasnt it Greenwood playing?
Funny as it sounds, I think I enjoyed listening to this recording almost more than hearing it live, without all the distractions that go with actually being there.
Re. the mastering - sounds bloody good to me! Love the fullness of the orchestra sound on Tunglið and Gleypa okkur particularly. Maybe a little distorted on Hægt, kemur ljósið and Þau hafa sloppið undan þunga myrkursins, but I guess the recording levels needed to be fairly high for the quieter songs.
And my heart still stops at the beginning of Þú ert jörðin where Óli just stopped playing, and looked at the conductor with an expression of mild panic on his face. Nice recovery though, Óli, haha.
Thanks for the feedback Rhoobs, To be perfect I think 1 of the settings needs to be 1-2dB's less but over all I quite like the fullness as it gives a similar feel to the experience which I think is an interesting concept in Mastering bootlegs. I also like the purity of recording as is but this will always fall to personal choice. As always, if anyone REALLY wants a purer more clean sound Im always happy to oblige to a another master

Thanks for this (and everything else you post!). Wish I was still in Mcr. to have seen this, I got to see Oli in Salford back in December 2007 when he played to only a handful. How times have changed!
Shasta. I'm too late.
I don't know if mediafire is being lame but it's erroring. I'll try back later to see if it's working.
