In 2002, he released his debut album on SubPop Records – traditionally a more rock-oriented label based in Seattle (though they have occasionally released records by singer/songwriters such as Rosie Thomas and Danielle Howle).
The Creek That Drank the Cradle (2002) was recorded and produced entirely by Beam himself at his home in Miami. On it, Beam can be heard playing all the instruments and singing in a hushed, secretive, but still rather melodic voice. His songs range from in-depth literate narratives ("Jesus the Mexican Boy") to love songs ("Naked As We Came"), and have helped to usher in a new generation of folk-pop singer/songwriters.
Since releasing The Creek, Beam/Iron & Wine has developed a fierce following. He has released nine albums to date, including his most recent collaboration with indie rock/alt.country band Calexico.Avatar is the perfect prescription for dark nights and stark winters. Guitars wail one moment, then almost whisper the next, and each song flows beautifully into its successor. Each musician -- guitarist/keyboardist James McGauran, bassist/keyboardist David Charles and drummer/bassist Bart Kowalski -- knows how to create the right mood for the moment, and their songs reflect a certain smugness, which at the same time projects an innocent DIY charm. It's almost as if the band doesn't quite know how good it is.
"God Mode", "Give Up The Ghost" and "Into The Light" are Avatar's best tracks, clocking in at more than 35 minutes collectively; the towering "Into The Light" is the best of the bunch. And while "Throw Me To The Sky" and "Sea Level" hover near the eight-minute mark themselves, neither song packs quite the punch of their longer siblings. Guest vocalist Karen Vogt makes an appearance on "Throw Me...", her voice almost otherworldly in its simplicity. Softly sung and heavily effected, her vocals present an interesting contrast to Avatar's other, entirely instrumental songs.
A number of bands are making similar music -- Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, and the aforementioned Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky are among Season's best-known peers. But whereas those acts' albums often sound heavily produced, Season's music is a bit rougher, which works in their favor. Perhaps that's why Avatar is one of the best albums I've heard this year.-- David A. Cobb
downloadRecorded in Austin, Texas (at Michael's house) January 2005
Released in October 2005 (part of the TRL Travels In Constants subscription series...subscriptions are all sold out and this record isn't in stores, but we will be selling them at shows for the next couple of years)
We promised Jeremy we would do a Travels in Constants e.p. literally over four years ago. Since then we've been sidetracked by an astonishing number of things. Two thousand and five was our year to take a bit of a step back and take some time to write new music, and along the way somewhere we got an idea for doing this e.p. in a different way then we've ever approached writing music. It can take us months and months and months to write even a song. Sometimes it comes much quicker, but often we spend many an afternoon trying out new melodies and riffs and drum beats, playing things over and over, obsessing and arguing and sighing and sitting silently for what seems to be hours on end. So, for this, our idea was to write and record a song every day for two weeks (this later became eight days) and the rest of the two weeks would be spent trying to mix and master the results. No riffs were to be written beforehand; things would be pretty much made up on the spot. It seemed daunting but fun and, perhaps, instructive. A learning experience. A chance to try new instruments and new ways of thinking about writing songs. Its also our first attempt at recording ourselves (the whole thing was recorded in Michael's house). Anyway, The Rescue is the result.
